Detroit Casinos open their doors Wednesday, December 23

Detroit casinos are ready to reopen on Wednesday, under an order issued by Governor Gretchen Whitmer allowing them to return to work on a limited basis.

Detroit casinos reopen their doors on Wednesday

Casinos in Detroit they plan to reopen this week as they have been closed for over a month. All three properties have developed reboot plans and are following the approval of Governor Gretchen Whitmer, who has issued a deferral to casinos and other entertainment venues allowing them to return in limited numbers as of today.

This is good news as all three casinos are losing cash, forecasting $ 50 million in losses by spring if they remained closed.

MotorCity Casino Hotel and MGM Grand Detroit confirmed that they will resume operations in Wednesday while Greektown Casino is still trying to fix the date and will have to "check the official date" first, he wrote on Twitter:

“In preparing for the reopening, please be patient while continuing to work with the Michigan Game Control Council, public health officials, state and local leaders. We look forward to opening up a safe gaming environment for you soon. ”

As the state approaches Michigan towards regulated online gambling and sports betting markets, state casinos are looking for ways to soften this dying financial year, to say the least.

Performance fell by more than 55% across all three Detroit properties in the first 11 months of the year, it said Michigan Gaming Control Board (MGCB). The current order will run until January 15, 2021. Further restrictions may be introduced if required.

The health authority restricts gatherings of more than 100 people anywhere, except in arenas where sporting events are held, and up to 250 people may attend, as required by an official state order.

Sleeping giants awake

The reopening is good news for the casino industry. Detroit casinos have had many attacks and have started this year, surely a tiresome and precarious operating model for any company. The performance in both October and September deteriorated significantly, prompting physical casinos to restart.

MGM Grand Detroit will open on Wednesday at 17:00 for slot machines, video poker and BetMGM Sportsbook. Commenting on plans to reopen, David Tsai, president Midwest Group, MGM Resorts International, said the band was ready to welcome guests back. Visitors will have access to 150,000 square feet of gaming space while adhering to social distancing measures.

MotorCity Casino Hotel however, it will restart earlier, with a reopening scheduled for Wednesday at 1pm. Customers will need to follow mandatory face masks, social distancing, and temperature controls.

The city is also relieved to see the casinos return, although their capacity is limited. In the best of times, Detroit casinos delivered $ 600,000 in tax revenue to the city's coffers per day. This amount was significantly reduced in 2020.
